Men of steel. India versus Pakistan. 4th. ODI - Multan.

Congratulations to Rahul Dravid, the Indian cricket team, Greg Chappell and the support staff for a deserving series win. That it came in Pakistan makes it extra special and avenges the loss at home last year. There was no shortage of people writing the team off after the loss at Peshawar, oblivious to the fact that the game was evenly poised when play was stopped.

That the team has come back from that loss and the demoralizing test defeat at Karachi, is a tribute to the team's determination and  professionalism. This has been the hallmark of this team over the last couple of years. Teams of the past have routinely rolled over after big losses abroad. The team is now doing justice to the overwhelming support it recieves from the fans and corporate India. It deserves our wholesome adulation.

Back to the game. Rahul won the toss and put Pakistan in. Our bowlers put in their best bowling performance of this series so far. Irfan and Sreesanth bowled well to start off and R P Singh used the conditions very well. As in the previous games, we took early wickets. This ensured that their batsmen were forced to focus on survival rather than scoring. The chance of taking advantage of the fielding restrictions in the powerplays was never an option.

Irfan bowled well, exploiting the moisture in the pitch ( 7.5-2-26-3). There are few bowlers in world cricket who use helpful conditions as well as him. Raina took a good catch to dismiss Kamran Akmal off Irfan to start the slide ( 15/1). Wickets fell in a flurry and it was soon 29/4. The only partnership of any substance was between Inzamam and Mohd. Yusuf for 68 runs till Yusuf fell with the score at 97. Pakistan were all out for 161.

Sreesanth bowled well too ( 8-1-30-1), getting Butt to a wonderful catch by Rahul Dravid. The catching today was top notch, making amends for Lahore. Pathan took a good catch later too. Sreesanth moves the ball less than the left armers but hits the deck hard and is easily our most lively bowler. He lends the attack variety and will be more effective than the rest on flat tracks.

R P today bowled like Pathan in a different body! He came up first change in the 13th. over and took the wickets of the in form Malik and Younis Khan in that over. He has the ability to swing the ball and has a good inswinger and off cutter like Pathan. He bowled with tight control today and was amply rewarded for it. I had criticized him for poor control at Lahore but he made amends today, winning the MOM award ( 10-0-40-4).

Agarkar, I am afraid, remains the weak link and I hope that some more bowling options show up before the world cup. Tendulker was the most economical bowler ( 9-0-27-1), getting his bunny, Inzamam, again, when he was looking dangeous. That is the largest bunny you will ever see!

India started poorly with Tendulker falling to a poor shot for a duck ( 5/1). Gambhir hit a few good shots mixed with some bad ones. He hit Sami for three 4s in one over, got carried away and fell to the last ball of that over ( 29/2). His spot in the ODI squad is going to remain shaky for now. Rahul and Yuvraj then set about repairing the damage and took the score to 114 before Yuvraj was caught behind for 37 ( 114/3). Kaif looked totally at sea during his six ball stay and slashed at a wide delivery without moving his feet. He fell for a duck making it 115/4. Rahul was lbw to an inswinging full toss from Sami and the Indians were suddenly under pressure ( 133/5). Raina reeled off a string of 4s, driving on the off side and looked good in an unbeaten 35 off 34 balls. Another wicket at 133 and we would have been in trouble but Raina made sure we won the game. Dhoni remained unbeaten on 2. The target was overhauled in 32.3 overs. A comprehensive victory by any standard.

I saw several people in the crowd praying fervently quite openly during the game. I wonder how they feel and what their thoughts are when their team still gets thrashed on the field.

Anyway, this series win ensures that the Indian cricket team's return to Karachi will be in stark contrast to their departure from the port city just a few days ago. And what a wonderful balm that is!

Dear astute Mr. Third Umpire,
Bob Woolmer is soon going on record in the Wisden about how technically fallible our top order is and is the latest in line to join the
"Sachin past his prime" bandwagon. In between there is some very tempered praise about our current batting line-up and though there appears to be some sensibility in his comments, which I'm led to believe is some sort of underhand advice to England to whom he owes some allegiance, I wonder if this is merely somewhat of a "sour grapes" scenario as it comes right on the heels of a sound thrashing meted out to his wards by our "men of steel" I hope he realises that he's put his credibility on line here as inspite of being so cognizant about our weaknesses he's lost the ODI series in a near humiliating fashion. What say you?
On a more lighter vein astute cricketing brain that you possess, can you tell me as to whether I should buy tickets for the semi-finals,finals,none,both or only the preliminiary rounds of the ensuing World Cup in the Caribbean

Do you think Dravid was out ? I dare say NO - he wasn't.

Do you think Kaif is improving at all with the short stints of domestic cricket he is being subjected to every now n' then - I would say NO again !

Now, do you think Saurav oops, Daada has any chance of a comeback - I feel like sayin' God' NO - no more !

Do you think Pakistan deserved victory in the 1st ODI courtesy D/L - I seem to hear NO again......

Do you think Inzamaam is the right choice for Captain of Pakistan - No, I guess.

And above all, do you think Shoaib Akhtar in the side would have made any difference to the Result in this One-day Series - No way, I feel. (Or maybe' he could have helped India make it 4-0 by now!@#$!

What say you - TU ?

Dear Thumper,

Sorry, I am not. I deal with the heart and can fix him if he is heartbroken!

Dangerous Dracula,

I think that Younis Khan may make a better captain but it is difficult to say that with certainty as I do not know the dynamics of the Pakistan dressing room.

Rahul did not look out to the naked eye but hawk eye felt the ball would hit leg stump. I trust my eyes but I did not make a fuss because it did not make a difference after all.

My views on Saurav are well known.

Shoaib Akhtar has not been a force in ODIs. I do not think his presence would make any difference to the result.

Dear Cricrazy,

People love to talk and it is difficult to stop them. Some like the sound of their own voices and talk even more. Bob Woolmer is merely betraying his own frustrations in making these statements. If mere advice could save the English team they would have never lost a game as they have more 'advisers' than any other team. They may not admit it but they rightly fear playing spin in India

It is all very well to make these comments about technique but actually getting these batsmen out is a totally different matter.

Since such technically imperfect batsmen have thrashed his bowlers into submission, he should save his breath and focus on his bowlers, who must be really bad going by his own logic.

That his team has been beaten by a team of technically challenged batsmen and 'poor' bowlers says a lot about his own team. Maybe he should resign as a failed coach!

I expect India to make it to the semi-finals at the least. I hope it's going to be a India vs Australia repeat final. Buy the tickets for super 8 matches ( B1) as India should top it's group, semi final and final. The group matches in Trinidad and Tobago do not feature top teams ( India, SL, Bangladesh, Bermuda) and are spread over a couple of weeks.

Hope this helps.

Hi TU,
Please dont ever mention Ganguly's name when you write.Firing him was the greatest decision that the Cricket board has done in the past 100 years!

India should prepare good spinning tracks for all the 3 Tests against England and inflict a humiliating 3-0 whitewash on the visitors. I'd like to see India field 3 spinners and crush the English side in 4 days.

Once they are through with the mauling in the Test matches, the 7 match ODI series will become that much easier to win.

This home-series should help India settle their opening combination (for Test matches) for good. The 1-day side never looked this good before ! Yet I would like to see some blokes from the U-19 Team to graduate to the Indian Senior side. Tests or 1-day.
