Pathetic, safety first selection.

I write this as the 1st. test is just getting underway. I wish to put my disappointment and disagreement with team selection on record. When advocating the selection of five bowlers in the previous column I knew that the team would persist with four which I think is just pathetic.

We are playing a team ravaged with injuries, at home, on a pitch made to order for spinners and still play safe! This is a poor decision, even if we win this game. I have been pointing out repeatedly that we would still have seven batsmen because of Dhoni and Irfan. If that's not enough, nothing ever will be for a team sporting such batting heavyweights.

You would understand England being defensive given their circumstances, but they still picked five bowlers!! It is bowlers that win test matches most times. After Karachi, this team should know that better than most.

As I watch Irfan get carted around in his second over and England make an ODI like start, I just wonder that if England make a big first inning score they could put India in serious trouble. We need to remember that a seriously crumbling wicket helps fast bowlers too.

Cook and Strauss are under no trouble at all. As pointed by yours truly repeatedly in the past, Irfan is looking pedestrian in unhelpfull conditions. England are 50/0, it is past midnight and I refuse to watch this farce any further. Will review the tape in the morning. I am off to bed. Sweet dreams.

I just hope I do not wake up to a nightmare in the morning.

Half the english team injured or rendered horse-de-combat even before the start of this tour suggests the traditional legacy of english cricketers hating to play on indian soil is far from over. On the contrary, the current blokes seem to carry on with this "i-hate-playin'-in-india" syndrome taking it to greater heights. I guess the england cricket team fancies no other opposition worthy of a serious challenge except the Aussies.
