Hats off to a true hero. India versus England. 2nd. Test Day 3. Mohali.

Few players have worked harder at their game than Anil Kumble. For one who has never been a big turner of the ball, his success is unparalleled. It makes his success all the more creditable. His long run up, the high arm delivery, the nippy pace - his bowling is unique and unlikely to be replicated. Harmison was his 500th. victim in 105 tests at about 29 per victim. This was his 32nd. fiver. Amazingly, he also has 8 ten wicket hauls. Kapil Dev, for comparison, crawled to 434 wickets in 131 tests!

Without doubt, India has not had a match winner like him, and that includes everybody to have ever played for India. Greats like Kapil, Gavasker, Sachin and Dravid pale in comparison if you look at match winning performances. He is also one of our most selfless - few will forget him bowling in Antigua with a fractured jaw against medical advice. You just have to look at the self serving antics of some our recent players to measure the true worth of the man. That he still is our most effective match winner at 35 should tell you all you need to know about him. I was beginning to have some doubts after Pakistan but his bowling in Mohali has been almost as good as ever before. We salute you, Jumbo!

Back to the match. England were all out for 300, which is a good 60 runs more than it should have been. In only the second over of the day, at 205/5 Munaf got Flintoff to edge one straight to Dravid at just over ankle height at first slip. Dravid was slow to react and floored a straight catch. It was a costly error as Flintoff took on the bowling later and the score read 283 when he was caught and bowled by Munaf. The tail was mopped up by Kumble and Munaf for only 17 runs.

Earlier, Kumble had bowled well without reward in the morning.

Sehwag failed again ( 11 off 13), playing a 'nothing' shot to a bouncer - very poor shot. Sachin was surprised by the steep bounce of one from Flintoff to be taken in the slips for 4. Jaffer scored 31 and Yuvraj 15. India are 149/4 and need Dhoni and Rahul to bat big to get out of the woods.
