Experiments galore - 6th. ODI in progress.
India are 57/2 at the end of 10 overs with Sehwag and Kaif, rather predictably, back in the pavilion.
There are wholesale changes to the team. Rahul and Irfan have been rested and we are playing 5 bowlers - Harbhajan, Powar, Munaf, VRV and R P Singh. The batsmen are Sehwag, Yuvraj, Kaif, Raina and Venugopal. I am a proponent of playing 5 bowlers in tests but not ODIs. Between Yuvraj, Raina and Sehwag we should be able to manage 10 overs, particularly on Indian pitches. When we are playing just 2 senior batsmen, we should play 7 batsmen and 4 bowlers. Add to that the fact that Irfan has been rested, I think our batting is pretty weak in this game. I do not agree with playing a batsman less in these circumstances and this strategy just doesn't make sense.
I would have liked to see Robin Uthappa in the side. Really no popint in including him in the squad if he does not get games. With Sehwag's wretched form continuing and Tendulker out for a while, we need options with the opening pair instead of yet another middle order batsmen in an already crowded middle order. With Yuvraj, Raina, Dhoni and Irfan the middle order is well covered. Venugopal does not look like a shining ODI prospect to me and the team will not gain anything by playing him. On the other hand, if Uthappa shines, we will discover a badly needed option.
I have generally been supportive of experimenting with the team but the changes today do not make sense at all and I have a feeling this experiment is going to collapse on it's ass.
The bowling changes, I think, are fine. Irfan has played non stop for a while and needs a rest. I would have played 4 bowlers, though.
Sehwag hit one good boundary and then threw his wicket away. He is playing like a mindless robot with no sense of shot selection. Kaif, paradoxically, played a couple of good drives before falling lbw to Mahmood for 15. He just moved too far across to one that came in. He should have no complaints, as he got a life when Collingwood dropped a sitter. It is time to put him out of his misery.
Dhoni is looking good. As I have been writing this, Yuvraj has fallen after dragging one onto the stumps for 4. Score reads 58/3. I think our poor record at Jamshedpur is set to continue. Really disapointed with the selection today. To me this appears to be experimentation just for the sake of it and we are likely to pay the price for it today.
